New York, NY, September 13 – Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) representatives participated in the 55th Annual Department of Public Information and Non-Governmental Organizations (DPI/NGO) Conference, entitled "Rebuilding Societies Emerging from Conflict: A Shared Responsibility." The conference was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, September 9-11, 2002.
AGBU Board Member, Carol Aslanian, and AGBU Communications Coordinator, Hrag Vartanian, attended the New York City events. This year’s DPI/NGO Conference was notable for the high level of Armenian participation and the inclusion of many discussions of Nagorny Karabakh on various panels.
Long-time AGBU donor, Andrienne Alexanian was a conference organizer and also co-chaired a panel entitled, “Working Towards Reconciliation in the Caucasus.” The featured speakers in that workshop were Baroness Caroline Cox, Deputy Speaker of the British House of Lords, Dr. Paul Crego, from the Library of Congress, and Khatoune Temisjian, Sociology Professor at the University of Montreal’s Center for Ethnic Studies. The Monday September 9th workshop utilized the Azerbaijan/Nagorny Karabakh and Georgia/Abkhazia conflicts as case studies to extensively exam the implications of conflict on Caucasian societies.
