A record number of Armenian young professionals and youth have been taking part in AGBU programs this summer. In addition to the close to 400 participants in the recently concluded FOCUS 2009 in Chicago, 67 college students are participating in Summer Intern Programs in New York, Paris & Yerevan; 300 boy & girl scouts are camping at the Antranik Scout Camp in Armenia; 225 youngsters are attending Camp Nubar in upstate New York, and hundreds more are participating in other camps and youth trips in dozens of countries. All in all, over 1,500 youths are spending this summer learning more about their heritage and meeting fellow Armenians at AGBU venues, events and activities around the world.
Online the story is similar: the newly launched Armenian Virtual College (AVC) has attracted a great amount of interest. Within five days of its launch in June, hundreds of potential students, ranging in age from 17 to 82, have registered for more information about the online school. Meanwhile, this summer, close to 150 students from 22 countries are already participating in AVC's inaugural semester. |

War and Peace in the Caucasus: Ethnic Conflict and the New Geopolitics
Vicken Cheterian
Having spent decades reporting on conflicts in Georgia and Chechnya, Vicken Cheterian provides an authoritative account of ethno-nationalistic strife in the Caucasus since the collapse of the Soviet Union. He investigates why some nationalist movements became violent while others did not and explores various secessionist rebellions in the region. He also discusses ongoing instability in the North Caucasus, Georgia, and Armenia, and analyzes the competition between Western powers and a newly resurgent Russia for the Caucasus's hydrocarbon resources. |
