This Week in Photos

The Interment of Alex & Marie Manoogian in Holy Etchmiadzin: Alex Manoogian, one of the most prominent Armenian-American philanthropists and AGBU honorary life president, and his wife, Marie, were reburied in Armenia with state honors on Tuesday more than a decade after their deaths in the United States.

On Tuesday, July 17, 2007, a visionary humanitarian, industrialist and leader, Alex Manoogian, and his wife, Marie, were interred at Holy Etchmiadzin--an honor otherwise reserved for catholicoi and princes of the Armenian Church.

Attended by Armenian and Karabakh government leaders, members of the Manoogian family, including daughter Louise and son Richard, AGBU President Berge Setrakian and AGBU Trustee Nazar Nazarian, the event, in the words of Richard Manoogian, represented "a pilgrimage...that symbolized for us the shining path that always directed toward the ancient soil of Armenia."

An internationally recognized Armenian American, Alex Manoogian, still remains an inspiring force in AGBU, where he is the Honorary Life President. His legacy continues today as the countless schools, churches, community centers, university chairs and institutions he built on six continents help thousands of individuals learn about and celebrate the Armenian heritage.

Next week, AGBU FOCUS 2007 kicks off in New York and the sold-out affair will be welcoming over 600 Armenian young professionals and honor the 20th anniversary of the AGBU New York Summer Intern Program (NYSIP). This year FOCUS will be fundraising for a special NYSIP scholarship endowment. Those interested in donating to the fund, which makes possible the participation of students otherwise unable to attend the program, click here.

AGBU's three summer intern programs (New York, Paris & Yerevan) are in full swing. As a special treat, the Yerevan program has launched a new blog to keep friends, family and supporters abreast of the goings-on in the Armenian capital. Join the fun at www.agbu.org/ysip.

by John Hughes, ArmeniaNow

She was born in Smyrna, and he in nearby Kasaba, at the dawn of a century that would soon bring defining tragedy to their people. She migrated with her family to New York in 1915. They met in New York, where they married in 1930. Death separated them 63 years later; she died in 1993 and he followed her to the grave in 1996, in Detroit, where he had become one of the most successful businessmen in his adopted country. >>
