As the holiday season begins in much of the world, AGBU members and friends will be happy to learn that a new edition of AGBU News Magazine will be appearing in their mailboxes very soon, while in two weeks AGBU's 84th General Assembly will be taking place in Paris, France and bringing together AGBU leaders for one of the most highly anticipated centennial celebrations. In breaking news, AGBU announced the creation of the Yerevan Summer Intern Program, which, along with the established programs in New York and Paris, will offer students the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain work and personal experiences in a vibrant city known for its culture and youthful energy. This fall in Armenia, students at Gyumri Boarding School #3 have experienced the generosity of AGBU firsthand through the combined efforts of London Chapter, which donated thousands of dollars to renovate the school for children with special needs, and youth volunteers from the France District, who visited the facility this past summer to complete some of the finishing touches for the re-opening. |

AGBU Breathes New Life Into Gyumri School for Children With Special Needs On September 1, 2006, Gyumri Boarding School #3 for students with special needs, in the northern Armenian province of Shirak, welcomed this year's student body to its newly renovated and refurbished building. Funded by AGBU London and with the contribution of volunteers from AGBU France, this is the first time this school, which has been operating for 15 years and enrolls 132 children, has been renovated. AGBU London provided funds in excess of $10,000 for this comprehensive renovation project, paying for construction materials and hiring contractors to complete some of the more specialized tasks. The Chapter specifically sponsored the construction of new lavatory facilities, replaced dormitory mattresses and beddings, and installed new flooring throughout the institution. AGBU France Summer Camp volunteers, who visited Armenia this past August, participated in the renovation effort by painting school walls and bringing a much-needed touch of color and vitality to the facility.. |
